Thailand Bombs Cambodian Border Area Amid Ceasefire Talks
December 26, 2025
Thailand carried out air strikes on a disputed border area with Cambodia on Friday. This happened while officials from both countries were still talking to stop the fighting. The Thai Air Force said it targeted a "fortified military position" in Cambodia after civilians left that area. Cambodia's defence ministry accused Thailand of "indiscriminate attacks" on civilian homes and said several people were hurt.
The fighting started again earlier this month after a fragile ceasefire in July. Since then, at least 41 people died and nearly one million were forced to leave their homes. Both Thailand and Cambodia blame each other for breaking the truce.
The violence has spread along most of the 500-mile border. Cambodia said Friday's attacks hit its Banteay Meanchey province with up to 40 bombs dropped by Thai F-16 jets. Thailand said the strikes aimed to control Nong Chan village, calling the mission "efficient and successful."
Meanwhile, negotiators from both sides held their third day of talks at a border checkpoint. Defence ministers are expected to join discussions on Saturday. Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said, "I hope this time will be the last one we'd have to sign, so that peace can occur in the area," adding, "[and] people can return to their homes."
The US and China are also helping to mediate a new ceasefire. This border dispute dates back over a century with past clashes causing deaths on both sides. Tensions worsened in May after a Cambodian soldier died. Then on 24 July, a Cambodian rocket attack led to Thai air strikes, starting five days of deadly fighting.
