Railway Ministry Aims to Double Train Capacity in Major Cities by 2030
December 26, 2025
On December 26, 2025, the Railway Ministry revealed ambitious plans to double the originating train capacity in 48 major cities across India by the year 2030. This comes as a response to rapid growth in travel demands. To achieve this, existing infrastructure will be expanded with new platforms and terminals, as well as advanced maintenance facilities like mega coaching complexes.
The Ministry emphasized that stations near the main terminals will also be upgraded to balance the increased capacity. For example, Pune city will enhance capacity not only at Pune station but also at nearby stations such as Hadapsar, Khadki, and Alandi.
The plan will cover both suburban and non-suburban traffic, recognizing their unique needs. A detailed, time-bound proposal will be submitted to the Planning Directorate, highlighting new works to meet the target. While the goal is set for 2030, some improvements will happen progressively over the next five years to provide immediate benefits.
“The plan will classify actions under three categories: immediate, short-term, and long-term,” the Ministry stated. Officials also called for each Zonal Railway to increase capacity not just at terminals but across their routes, addressing operational bottlenecks at stations and yards.
Cities included in the plan stretch from Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru to Patna, Pune, Mathura, Agra, and Ludhiana. This wide coverage aims to transform rail travel infrastructure across India’s major urban centers, preparing them for future demand.
