India Raises Alarm over US Mass Cancellation of H-1B Visa Interviews Affecting Thousands
December 26, 2025
India on Friday raised concerns with the US government over the cancellation of many pre-set H-1B visa interviews for Indian applicants. Interviews scheduled from mid-December were abruptly postponed by several months. The US authorities said the delay aims to closely check applicants’ social media posts and online profiles. Some applicants who had interviews last week received emails saying their appointments are now moved to as late as May next year.
External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said India got many complaints from nationals struggling to reschedule their visa interviews. He explained, "Visa-related issues pertain to the sovereign domain of any country, but we have flagged these issues and our concerns to the US side, both here in New Delhi and in Washington DC." Jaiswal added that many Indians were stuck in India for long periods, causing "hardships" to them and their families, including disruptions to education.
The cancellations affected all appointments from December 15 onwards. Most applicants were already in India and could not return to the US as their visas had expired. The cancellations hit hard during the busy US holiday season when many aim to travel.
Thousands of highly skilled workers now face big delays in returning to their US jobs. The government of India said it is actively working with US officials to reduce the impact on these citizens and find a speedy solution.
