Calcutta HC Stays Out of SIT Probe Into Messi Event Chaos at Salt Lake
December 23, 2025
The Calcutta High Court has refused to interfere in the ongoing special investigation team (SIT) probe into the chaos at Argentine football star Lionel Messi's event held at Salt Lake Stadium on December 13. The Division Bench led by Acting Chief Justice Sujoy Paul said the investigation is still in early stages. Three PILs had sought transferring the probe to the CBI and demanded refunds for tickets bought by spectators. Some attendees caused trouble after failing to see Messi properly when the event ended early. The court found no proof that the SIT’s probe is flawed or biased and thus refused to stay the investigation. Justice Partha Sarathi Sen added that the SIT members do not have any interest in the case, so court will not intervene now. The bench said merely alleging irregularities does not justify moving the case to CBI except in rare cases with clear evidence. The state government and event organiser must file responses within four weeks, with petitioners replying in two weeks. The three PILs will be heard again in the week starting February 16. The West Bengal government told the court it did not sell tickets nor organise the event, which was managed privately. The state's DGP received a show cause notice after the incident. The event organiser, Satadru Dutta, was arrested following the chaos. Dutta's lawyer said it was unclear how many people crowded near Messi, blocking others’ views, since police controlled entry points. Lawyer for petitioner Suvendu Adhikari questioned how the event was funded and requested a central agency investigation. Another petitioner’s lawyer said the state’s inquiry committee is only administrative, not judicial. The court noted the government had formed this committee, including a retired judge, and that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed regret right after the incident.
