No New Violence in Assam's Karbi Anglong After Protest Turned Violent
December 23, 2025
Assam’s Karbi Anglong district saw no new violence on Tuesday, December 23, a day after protestors set fire to the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) chief's residence and around 15 shops. Police confirmed no fresh incidents since the riot on Monday night. A night curfew remains imposed from 5 p.m. to 6 a.m., along with prohibitory orders banning gatherings and movement. Senior Assam Minister Ranoj Pegu said additional forces have been deployed and the "situation is under control." He added, "A section of the people are angry that the encroachers are settling on PGR and VGR land, and there was an attempt to evict them last year, but a petition was filed in the Gauhati High Court, which passed an interim order staying the eviction process." The matter, he said, "can be resolved only through dialogue," and discussions with protestors and encroachers are ongoing. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma clarified that rumors of arrests of three hunger-striking protestors were false. "No one has been arrested, but they were taken for treatment to Guwahati as their health condition deteriorated," he said. Sarma added he was in touch with local officials and leaders and hoped to restore peace by Tuesday night. The protests began over demands to evict illegal settlers, mainly from Bihar, occupying Professional Grazing Reserve (PGR) and Village Grazing Reserve (VGR) lands. Protestors have been on a hunger strike for 12 days. On Monday, police fired on protestors, injuring four and preventing an attack on the Kheroni police station. A group of protestors set the former residence of KAAC Chief Executive Member Tuliram Ronghang on fire amid clashes. Section 163 of the Bhartiya Nyay Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) was imposed by the Karbi Anglong district magistrate from December 22 to maintain peace. It bans gatherings over five people, rallies, picketing, and the use of loudspeakers without permission. Police and administration officials are exempt from movement restrictions. Senior police officials, including Assam DGP Harmeet Singh, visited the area to review the situation and increase security deployment. The tension escalated after police tried to remove protestors forcibly, sparking further clashes. The Long-standing demand for eviction had led to notices being issued by KAAC in February 2024 but was stalled by the Gauhati High Court after a petition was filed. The unrest injured three protestors and some security personnel. More updates are awaited.
