On December 22, 2025, protesters in West Karbi Anglong district, Assam, set fire to the ancestral residence of Tuliram Ronghang, Chief Executive Member of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC). The protest erupted over Mr. Ronghang's alleged failure to evict "outsiders" from government-designated grazing reserves. At least four people, including three protesters, were injured in clashes with security forces at Donkamokam, 155 km southeast of Guwahati. The protestors marched 26 km from Kheroni, where they had been on a hunger strike for two weeks. They demanded eviction of "non-locals" occupying village grazing reserves (VGRs) and professional grazing reserves (PGRs). Tensions rose after police detained nine protesters on December 21 night. This led to roadblocks and vandalism before the march to Donkamokam. Protestors said security forces used force and fired blank shots to disperse the crowd. While some fought security personnel, others attacked and burned Mr. Ronghang's home. The KAAC spokesperson said Mr. Ronghang was not present during the incident. The unrest then spread to other parts of West Karbi Anglong targeting "outsiders." The state government sent additional security forces to control the violence. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma deputed Education Minister Ranoj Pegu to assess the situation. Mr. Ronghang told journalists that eviction notices were served but settlers challenged them in Gauhati High Court. He said, "The case is in court. Had I done anything, I would have been punished for contempt of court." In February 2024, KAAC issued eviction notices to about 10,000 people for encroaching 7,184.7 acres of grazing reserves in Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong. Many accused of encroachment are Hindi speakers from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.
