At least nine people died and 10 were injured after gunmen opened fire at a tavern early Sunday in Bekkersdal, an area about 40 km southwest of Johannesburg. Around 1 am, approximately a dozen armed suspects arrived in two vehicles—a white kombi and a silver sedan—and began shooting at people both inside and outside the bar. "The suspects opened fire at tavern patrons and continued to shoot randomly as they fled the scene," said the South African Police Service. Some victims were shot nearby during the escape. The initial death toll was reported as 10 but later revised to nine. Among the killed was a driver for an online car-hailing service who was outside the bar. Major General Fred Kekana, provincial police commissioner, confirmed this to SABC. The police have launched a manhunt and asked witnesses to come forward. The motive remains unknown. This is the second mass shooting this month; on December 7, gunmen killed at least 11 people in a hostel near Pretoria. Illegal alcohol outlets are often linked to such violence. South Africa faces growing violent crime fueled by gangs, business disputes, and illegal guns. Police data shows an average of 63 people are killed daily from April to September, highlighting the nation's ongoing crisis.
