Two Workers Trapped in Wall Collapse at Jharkhand Opencast Mine, Rescue Underway

Two workers were trapped when the wall of an opencast mine collapsed on a truck in Jharkhand's Hazaribagh district. The accident happened around 11 p.m. on December 20, 2025, in the Central Coalfield Limited area under Urimari Police Station. A senior officer said, "The accident occurred around 11 p.m. on Saturday (December 20, 2025) in the command area of Central Coalfield Limited (CCL) under the Urimari Police Station limits when the highwall of the mine caved in on the coal-loading vehicle." Experts define a highwall as the exposed face of overburden and coal that must remain stable for safety. The trapped workers were identified as Sunil Yadav (30) and Raju Paswan (50). Barkagaon Sub-Divisional Police Officer Pawan Kumar said, "The trapped coal workers, who were on the truck when the accident occurred, were identified as Sunil Yadav (30) and Raju Paswan (50)." He added, "A rescue operation is underway for the two workers. Another person has already been rescued from the accident site and admitted to a hospital here." Rescue could not proceed on the night of December 20 due to darkness, fog, and a protest by coal workers. "The trapped workers could not be rescued on Saturday (December 20, 2025) night due to darkness, fog and a protest by coal workers there," said the SDPO. After the accident, laborers stopped coal extraction activities at the mine. "The labourers at the opencast mine stopped their coal extraction activities after the accident," Pawan Kumar added.
