Zambian Nurse Survives Aggressive Blood Cancer After Stem Cell Transplant at KIMS Hyderabad
December 20, 2025
A 27-year-old nurse from Zambia, Mumba Margaret, has recovered after battling aggressive blood cancer at KIMS Hospital, Hyderabad. Diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia in September 2023, she was advised a bone marrow transplant and traveled to Hyderabad for specialized care. Before the transplant, she was found to have tuberculosis. During treatment, her cancer relapsed, requiring more chemotherapy. Multiple infections led to a 40-day hospital stay.
On June 19, Margaret underwent her first stem cell transplant, said Narendra Kumar Thota, Head of Hemato-Oncology and Stem Cell Transplant at KIMS. After the procedure, she faced rare complications like severe dyselectrolytemia, which risks seizures, kidney failure, and heart problems.
"At one stage, her condition deteriorated sharply, and she experienced more than seven cardiac arrests. Each episode required emergency resuscitation, with teams from critical care, cardiology and stem cell transplantation working in close coordination to revive her," said Thota.
Thanks to the combined efforts of medical teams and her resilience, Margaret survived this medical ordeal and is now recovering well.
