Jordan Joins US Air Strikes in Syria Against ISIS After Killing of Three Americans
December 20, 2025
Jordan confirmed on Saturday that its air force took part in strikes launched by the United States against Islamic State group targets in southern Syria. These strikes were in retaliation for the killing of three US citizens earlier this month in Syria. The US attacked multiple sites on Friday to "eliminate" ISIS fighters and weapons after a Syrian gunman killed two US troops and one American civilian interpreter. The Jordanian military said its air force "participated in precise airstrikes... targeting several ISIS positions in southern Syria." Jordan is part of the global coalition of 90 countries fighting ISIS. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported at least five people died in the strikes, including the leader and members of an ISIS cell. The operation aimed "to prevent extremist groups from exploiting these areas as launching pads to threaten the security of Syria's neighbors and the wider region, especially after ISIS regrouped and rebuilt its capabilities in southern Syria," said Jordan's statement. US Central Command said forces hit more than 70 targets with fighter jets, helicopters, and artillery. Jordan supported with fighter aircraft. Since the December 13 attack, US and partner forces have carried out 10 operations in Syria and Iraq, killing or detaining 23 terrorists. They have done over 80 counterterrorism operations in Syria in six months. President Trump vowed "very serious retaliation" for the shooting in the Syrian desert. He blamed ISIS and backed Syria's interim President Ahmad al-Sharaa, who supports the US strikes. ISIS has not claimed the attack on US troops but claimed other attacks on Syrian forces. The gunman was a Syrian security guard suspected of ISIS links. He attacked a meeting between US and Syrian officials and was killed. The attack also wounded three US troops and Syrian forces.
