Kerala Local Polls Reveal Anti-Incumbency Against LDF; UDF and BJP Gain Ground
December 14, 2025
Kerala's ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF), led by CPI(M), faces strong anti-incumbency three months before assembly polls. The Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) won decisively in recent local body elections, especially in Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, and Malappuram. These are traditional UDF areas where anti-Left votes united. Urban voters turned away from the Left, favoring UDF and sometimes BJP-led NDA. The Left lost ground even in its strongholds, like Kollam Corporation, and slipped to third place in some municipalities such as Chengannur and Mavelikara. The Left’s attack on Congress and its ally IUML over ties with radical parties backfired, strengthening UDF in northern districts. The Left also lost Hindu votes, despite efforts around Ayyappa Sangamam. However, LDF held well in rural areas and parts of southern Kerala, though it lost Thrissur Corporation. BJP’s appeal to Christian voters in Thrissur failed to grow. In central Kerala and hill districts, Christian votes largely favored UDF except a few places leaning towards NDA. LDF's strategy of fielding independents to attract Kerala Congress(M) voters failed. Some CPI(M) leaders regret not highlighting government achievements on poverty eradication during the campaign. UDF’s win boosts Congress and IUML morale ahead of assembly polls but they must check BJP’s rise to avoid a hung house in 2026. The NDA kept or improved seats in many urban areas, except for places like Pandalam, which saw hung verdicts. BJP’s upset victory in Thiruvananthapuram may serve as a model for upcoming polls.
