On December 13, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol acted quickly to stop a sleeping driver on the Will Rogers Turnpike near Vinita. At about 12:20 p.m., troopers got calls about a Kia moving slowly and the driver slumped over inside. Lt. Brian McSlarrow found the car going around 40 mph and weaving within its lane. The driver did not respond to emergency lights. McSlarrow used a special driving technique, called a tactical vehicle intervention maneuver, to safely stop the car and wake the driver. The man said he had worked almost 20 hours in 24 and had stopped to eat before driving. His car's lane assist system kept the vehicle in its lane, though he was asleep. Troopers gave him a ticket and called his wife to take him home. Oklahoma Highway Patrol warned, "Driving while sleepy is extremely dangerous and can be just as dangerous, if not more so, than driving intoxicated." They added that many crashes happen due to drowsy drivers. This event reminds everyone to avoid driving tired for safety.
