GHMC May Split Into Three Corporations After February 2026 Elections
January 1, 2026
The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), recently expanded to 2,053 sq km, may soon break into smaller parts. GHMC Commissioner R.V. Karnan indicated on December 31, 2025, that the current corporation will stay as is only until February 2026. That is when the present council's term ends, and new elections are due. However, these elections might only happen after GHMC splits.
Two Additional Commissioners have been appointed for groups of three zones each, adding to speculation. G. Srijana oversees Kukatpally, Quthbullapur, and Serilingampally, while Vinay Krishna Reddy manages Malkajgiri, LB Nagar, and Uppal. These officials report to Karnan through a chain of command involving zonal commissioners.
Sources say that after February, GHMC might divide into two or three separate corporations: Hyderabad, Cyberabad, and Malkajgiri. Hyderabad Corporation would hold 150 wards, including key areas like Secunderabad, Jubilee Hills, and Shamshabad. Cyberabad would include IT-focused zones from Narsingi to Shamirpet. Malkajgiri would cover the city's eastern and northern parts.
Staffing reshuffles in Engineering and Town Planning departments point to major changes ahead. Malkajgiri corporator Sravan Kumar Vurapalli suggested that the Congress and AIMIM may be behind the split. He also criticized the possible uneven development, with Cyberabad gaining more and Malkajgiri losing out, demanding a special package for Malkajgiri.
The GHMC's future as the largest civic body in India seems set for a dramatic change soon.
