Indore Water Crisis: 10 Dead, Over 2000 Sick; Officials Fired and Suspended
December 31, 2025
Indore in Madhya Pradesh faces a severe health crisis as contaminated water kills 10 people and sickens over 2,000. Among the dead is a six-month-old child and six women. More than 100 people from Bhagirathpura area are hospitalized after drinking tainted water from the municipal supply. Indore Municipal Corporation fired in-charge sub-engineer Shubham Shrivastava and suspended zonal officer Shaligram Sitole and assistant engineer Yogesh Joshi under Chief Minister Mohan Yadav's orders. The Chief Medical and Health Officer’s office states that 7,992 houses were checked and nearly 40,000 people examined. Around 2,456 suspected patients received first aid. Currently, 162 patients remain hospitalized, with 26 in ICUs. A three-member panel led by IAS officer Navjeevan Panwar will investigate the tragedy and delays in starting a new water supply line. Cabinet Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya called the incident "unfortunate" as patient numbers fluctuate. IMC Commissioner Dileep Yadav said the officials responsible failed to detect leaks. A major sewage leak was fixed, and water quality tests are planned before resuming supply. Over 100 water tankers serve residents meanwhile. The Madhya Pradesh High Court has issued notices to state authorities, demanding a status report by January 2 and ordering free treatment after private hospitals allegedly refused care without payment. A petitioner also urged a probe committee headed by a retired High Court judge. The State Congress has formed a five-member fact-finding squad to report by January 5. Funds for a new supply line are awaited under the AMRUT program, delaying repairs. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav visited hospitals to meet victims on December 31, 2025.
