Union Cabinet Freezes Vodafone Idea's AGR Dues of Rs. 87,695 Cr for Five Years
December 31, 2025
The Union Cabinet has decided to freeze Vodafone Idea Ltd’s Adjusted Gross Revenue (AGR) dues at Rs. 87,695 crore as of December 31, 2025. This freeze will last for five years, giving the company much-needed breathing space. A senior official said on Wednesday that the payment of these dues will be rescheduled over the financial years 2031-32 to 2040-41.
The official added, “The AGR dues frozen as on 31.12.2025 shall also be reassessed by DoT based on Deduction Verification Guidelines dated 03.02.2020 and audit reports.” The final decision will be made by a government committee and “shall be binding on both parties.”
The Centre holds a 49% equity stake in Vodafone Idea Ltd (VIL). This decision aims to protect competition in the telecom sector and secure the interests of 20 crore VIL consumers. It comes as a relief to Vodafone Idea, which has been struggling financially and seeking ways to stay afloat.
This move follows the recent Supreme Court orders concerning AGR dues, with the government showing willingness to reconsider additional claims. The freeze and rescheduling of payments offer Vodafone Idea a vital opportunity to regain financial stability and raise funds for survival.
