On Tuesday, over one lakh devotees had darshan of Sri Parthasarathi Perumal at Triplicane on Vaikuntha Ekadashi. Darshan began at 2 a.m., and the grandly decorated Sorgavasal doors opened at 4 a.m. The utsava deity was brought out through these doors. The temple administration arranged separate queues for senior citizens and distributed over one lakh water bottles. Devotees also received laddu, kalkandu, Tulsi, and a small book on the Gita. The day signals the start of Raa Pathu, so the deity was adorned in a pearl-stitched dress called Muthuangi. The Sorgavasal will remain open daily from 4 p.m. for the next nine days. Religious expert Thirumalai Vinjamoor Venkatesh said Vaikuntha Ekadashi started at Srirangam, where Sri Rangamatha agreed to hear the Nalayira Divya Prabandham. During Pagal Pathu and Raa Pathu festivals, 3,000 songs from the Prabandham will be sung. The final 1,000 songs, called Iyarpaa, will be chanted on the last day.
