Kerala has witnessed a big rise in water sports in 2025. Kayaking, surfing, scuba diving, and skimboarding have become very popular. The state’s many lakes, rivers, and long coastline offer perfect spots for these adventures. Anoop KP, an ISA-certified coach from Kochi, said, "professional level water sports has set a benchmark which helped recreational activities grow." Stand-up paddling is also growing fast, especially in Kochi’s calm backwaters and sea. Scuba diving is attracting more people too. Joseph Deleesh, director of Aqualeo PADI Dive Centre in Kochi, noted, "People have opened their eyes to what we have here in our own city." He trained 40 women recently at Shasthamugal Lake, known for its clear fresh water and fish. Cliff jumping, involving a 30-foot drop, is gaining fans as a stress buster, says Deleesh. At Varkala, surfing has built a strong community. Anandhu SG of Surf N Sea said, "we have formed an association to create awareness about surfing and offer training to children." Skimboarding, a fun shallow water sport ideal for families and kids, is booming in Kochi. Bimal Xavier from Skim B said, "People love it because it does not need swimming skills." In Kozhikode, Jellyfish Watersports promotes rafting, kayaking, rowing, and more on the Chaliyar river. Founder Prasad Thumbai highlighted the Malabar River Festival as a popular yearly event. He added, "families including children can indulge in water sporting activities because it blends excitement, laughter, and makes memories." Kerala’s water sports scene is now more accessible and safe, with trained professionals and events across the state.
