Ambedkar Porata Samithi’s State president Soru Sambayya on Monday urged the government to give at least three acres of land to each Scheduled Caste (SC) family. He said 15 lakh acres of barren land are available in Andhra Pradesh for this purpose. This could benefit about 1.7 crore SC people in the state. The demand was raised during a protest held at Vizianagaram by Ambedkar Porata Samithi and allied groups. They asked the government to follow the Koneru Ranga Rao Committee’s report, submitted two decades ago, recommending land distribution to SC families. Mr. Sambayya also appealed to the Union government to guide states on this issue, quoting Dr. B. R. Ambedkar’s vision for better economic conditions for Dalits. He warned of a major protest soon at Jantar-Mantar, New Delhi, to gain Union government attention. He added, "We are planning massive agitation in Jantar-Mantar of New Delhi very soon to draw the attention of the Union government since a majority of the State governments had ignored the welfare of the Dalit people." He also spoke about the lack of sufficient funds for Dalits through the A.P Scheduled Castes Cooperative Finance Corporation and vowed to fight for proper implementation of welfare schemes. The protest saw participation from Ambedkar Porata Samithi Vizianagaram District general secretary Enda Gopala Rao, Vizianagaram Zilla Jai Bhim Association president Basava Suryanarayana, and others.
