Kannur Cyber Police have registered a case after a video showing the explosion of a country-made bomb was posted on Instagram by ‘Red Army Kannur’, a social media account supporting Left parties. The FIR was filed following a report from Kerala Police’s Special Branch, Intelligence Wing. The video reel showed visuals of a country bomb explosion. After it appeared, CPI(M) and Indian Union Muslim League activists exchanged threats in the comments, which the police said amounted to an attempt to incite riots. This social media activity came amid violence between UDF and LDF activists in Kannur after local body election results. Police said they would seek information from Meta to find out who operates the ‘Red Army Kannur’ account and to verify if the explosion was real. The case was filed under Section 192 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause a riot.
