Delhi Police Detain Protesters Opposing Kuldeep Singh Sengar's Bail Near Parliament
December 27, 2025
Delhi Police detained activist Yogita Bhayana, Congress leader Mumtaz Patel, and several protesters on Saturday, December 27, 2025. They were holding a sit-in near the Parliament complex to oppose the suspension of the life sentence of Unnao rape convict Kuldeep Singh Sengar. The protesters arrived around 4 p.m. and sat on the road, raising slogans against Sengar's bail granted by the Delhi High Court last week. Police warned via loudspeakers that the area was not a designated protest site and asked them to leave. When protesters refused, police removed and detained them. This protest came a day after the Unnao rape survivor's mother and activists from the All India Democratic Women's Association, including Yogita Bhayana, protested outside the Delhi High Court. The survivor’s mother said she would approach the Supreme Court against the bail order and showed faith in the apex court. The Delhi High Court on December 23 ordered Sengar’s release on bail pending appeal of his 2017 rape conviction. The court set strict conditions, including barring him from entering within five kilometres of the victim’s residence. Sengar remains in jail as he is also serving a 10-year sentence related to the custodial death of the survivor's father and has not been granted bail in that case.
