Anjel Chakma, a 24-year-old tribal MBA student from Pecharthal, North Tripura, died on December 26, 2025, in Dehradun, Uttarakhand. He was stabbed by a group of allegedly drunk men more than two weeks earlier. The Chakma Development Foundation of India (CDFI) said the attackers used racial slurs against Anjel and his brother Michael before the attack. Five local men have been arrested, but the main suspect remains free. The CDFI urged Union Home Minister Amit Shah to ensure a fair trial, calling it a “racially motivated murder.” They recalled a 2014 Home Ministry committee’s suggestion for a special anti-racial violence law after Arunachal Pradesh youth Nido Tania's killing. CDFI founder Suhas Chakma criticized the Uttarakhand police for delaying the FIR by three days and not applying all relevant legal sections. This delay allowed the prime accused to escape. The killing mirrors past racial violence cases. The M.P. Bezbaruah Committee had recommended a separate law or changes to existing laws to better tackle such crimes. The CDFI pointed out that recent amendments to the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita are not enough to handle violence against Northeast people effectively. The CDFI demanded the Uttarakhand government charge the accused under stricter laws, immediately arrest the main suspect, and grant ₹1 crore compensation to Anjel’s family. They also called for a special helpline in Dehradun for Northeast residents, like the one in Delhi's Special Police Unit for North-Eastern Region. Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma, Tipra Motha founder, also asked for justice for Anjel Chakma and his family.
