US Delays H-1B Visa Stamping; Indians Stuck Abroad Worry About US Houses, Jobs
December 27, 2025
Hundreds of Indians are stuck in India due to massive delays in US H-1B visa stamping. The US consulates in India have postponed December interviews by at least six months. January appointments have also been canceled and pushed to late 2026. These cancellations are random, caused by new social media vetting, and aimed at reducing consulate workload. Indians who traveled to India for interviews now can’t return without valid visa stamps, especially if they have no other visa.
Many companies are consulting attorneys to decide if H-1B workers stuck in India can work from home. Otherwise, they risk losing their jobs.
A Reddit user sparked viral discussion by asking what H-1B visa holders with US homes and cars are doing while stranded in India. Some explained they have stayed in the US for 10 years, making renting impractical. Green Cards take 10 years for Indians to get, so many invest in homes. Some say those allowed to work from home can manage mortgage and car payments. Others consider renting or selling their homes, or giving power of attorney to trusted friends or family to manage their assets.
India’s external affairs ministry said it has raised these visa delay issues with US authorities in New Delhi and Washington DC, recognizing the hardships faced by Indians due to appointment backlogs.
