The Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) is making big bucks from bus advertisements. Currently, ads on BMTC buses generate ₹4.79 crore every month, adding up to ₹57.54 crore a year. Officials forecast this could jump to nearly ₹230 crore over the next three to four years. Since January, BMTC started full-body ad wraps on 3,400 buses, moving away from just rear-panel ads. One company wraps 3,000 ordinary buses, and another handles 400 AC buses. Ordinary buses offer about 350 sq. ft. of ad space, while AC buses have around 430 sq. ft. BMTC charges ₹12,616 monthly per ordinary bus and ₹25,255 per AC bus for ads. AC buses run on premium routes like the airport and IT corridors, attracting more advertisers. Important details like BMTC logo, vehicle numbers, and depot IDs remain visible amid ads. The ads use eco-friendly materials and include mandatory Kannada text, following government rules. Past issues with blocked view stickers led to using transparent materials now to keep visibility clear for passengers. BMTC runs a fleet of 6,158 buses, including 1,027 electric ones. In this fiscal year, it earned ₹811 crore from non-traffic sources like land leasing, station space rentals, commercial stalls, offices, parking, and bus rear ads. BMTC’s success is in line with Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation’s move to use full wraps on metro coaches to grow non-fare revenues.
