Contract Worker Caught Red-Handed Stealing ₹23,130 from Sabarimala Hundi
December 26, 2025
The Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) Vigilance arrested K.R. Ratheesh, a contract employee, for stealing ₹23,130 from the hundi at Sabarimala Sannidhanam. Officials caught him during his duty hours while he went to the toilet. They found ₹3,000 on him and discovered six ₹500 notes hidden inside a hand glove cloth pouch used by workers for counting offerings. A search of his home recovered an additional ₹20,130. Police suspect the stolen cash was smuggled out by concealing it in private parts.
More than 300 employees work at two hundi counting units near the temple, with around 200 temporary staff. The area is under 24/7 CCTV, police, and Vigilance watch. Workers can only wear a single mundu to prevent theft. Despite tight security, the accused managed to steal cash in a secretive way.
Separately, Vigilance found ₹64,354 in coins and notes abandoned near Malikappuram Melsanthi Madam in the rice storage area. This money was hidden among rice sacks offered to the temple. Officials suspect someone may have secretly stored stolen offerings there.
The Sannidhanam police have registered a case and are investigating further.
