The Communist Party of India (CPI) celebrates its 100th anniversary on December 26, 2025. More than a centenary, this milestone reflects a century of shaping India's fight for freedom and social change. The party’s revolutionary slogan “Inquilab Zindabad,” inspired by Maulana Hasrat Mohani and popularised by Bhagat Singh, spread hope and resistance across India. Founded in 1925 at Kanpur, an industrial hub, CPI focused on workers and peasants as the heart of India's struggle against British rule. Despite facing harsh repression and arrests, CPI remained strong in organising mass movements nationwide. The party fought against colonialism not by elites but through the struggles of ordinary people, including workers, peasants, and students. CPI also helped fight foreign control in French and Portuguese colonies like Goa and Pondicherry early on. It built strong mass organisations such as trade unions and farmer groups. The party led key uprisings like the Telangana armed struggle and Tebhaga movement, securing rights and dignity for workers and peasants. CPI pushed for full independence, land reforms, labour rights, and social equality. It linked caste oppression with class exploitation, broadening the vision of justice. Internationally, CPI stood against imperialist wars and fascism, supporting global freedom movements. The 1946 Royal Indian Navy mutiny was seen as a crucial working-class fight aiding the final push for independence. After 1947, CPI focused on removing feudalism, redistributing land, and nationalising industries to serve the public. It also fought for the rights of Dalits, minorities, and women, upholding secularism and diversity in India’s democracy. Today, CPI warns that India faces new dangers like growing communalism, fascism, inequality, and ecological crises. It calls for a renewed Left united to protect democracy and promote equality, justice, and progress. The party opposes the RSS-BJP agenda, which it says threatens the Constitution and social harmony. CPI’s general secretary says the party must clean institutions, reclaim the Republic, and build a fair society. The red flag symbolizes hope and strength for a just, classless, and casteless India. The party stresses that organised people guided by communist ideas can create a new India that is democratic and prosperous. The CPI’s 100-year legacy stands as proof that struggle and unity can change history.
