Tamil Nadu Removes 97.4 Lakh Voters in Electoral Roll Revision Amid Controversy
December 24, 2025
The Tamil Nadu State Public (Elections) Department announced on December 19, 2025, that 97.4 lakh names were removed from the electoral rolls in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR). But the process has sparked worries over its fairness and accuracy. The Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), Archana Patnaik, claimed over 6.41 crore forms were distributed with 100% coverage. However, many voters in cities like Chennai and Coimbatore say they never received any forms and had to request them. Others found their names deleted despite submitting forms successfully online.
The CEO stated booth-level officers made "at least three visits" to collect forms, but some areas reported only one or two visits. In Tiruvallur, forms were reportedly submitted without voters' knowledge. One Chennai resident revealed their name and voter ID were removed from the current address without notice and reassigned to an old address.
The largest deleted category is Absent/Shifted/Deceased (ASD), which totals around 66.4 lakh voters, but how these figures were determined remains unclear. The CEO said deceased voters, estimated at 27 lakh, were identified via field inquiry, yet death certificate collection is inconsistent. The authorities have not published district-wise or gender-wise data on ASD deletions timely.
Political reactions vary. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin criticized deletions exceeding 10% in 168 constituencies and highlighted errors like live voters being marked deceased. The AIADMK, led by Edappadi K. Palaniswami, supports the revision, claiming most deleted voters were bogus. Both major parties agree no genuine voters should be excluded. The final date to add voters is January 18.
The Election Commission and CEO must address these doubts to ensure a free and fair election next year.
