The Dharwad District Police have arrested six suspects in connection with the honour killing of a pregnant woman in Inam Veerapur village, Hubballi taluk. The woman died after assault injuries, and her father, Prakashgouda Patil, along with Arungouda Patil, were taken into custody on Monday. Four others—Viranagouda, Fakkiragouda, Basanagouda, and Gurusiddagouda—were also arrested, bringing the accused total to 15. The police continue to search for the remaining suspects. Nine family members of Vivekanand Doddamani, husband of the deceased Manya, were injured in the attack and are now recovering in a private hospital in Hubballi. On Tuesday, protests took place in Hubballi and Kalaburagi. Members of Jai Bhim Yuva Shakti Sena gathered outside Mini Vidhana Soudha in Hubballi, strongly condemning the killing and demanding the death penalty for the accused. They submitted a memorandum to the tahsildar. In Kalaburagi, the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) and Students Federation of India (SFI) held a protest at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Chowk. DYFI State president Lavitra Vastrad said, "The incident shows deep-rooted caste and patriarchal mindset where the freedom of choice of young people, especially women, continues to be denied by society." He added, "Honour killing and violence in the name of caste and religion are an assault on Constitutional values." Protestors called for the State government to enact a law banning honour killings, provide legal protection for youth choice rights, and punish all involved strictly. They also urged awareness programs to uphold Constitutional values and prevent such crimes.
