Underwater RoV Inspection Begins at Mullaperiyar Dam to Check Structural Integrity
December 23, 2025
An underwater inspection has started at the Mullaperiyar Dam in Idukki using a remotely operated vehicle (RoV). This check aims to see how strong the dam structure is, focusing on its waterfront part. The 1,200-ft-long dam is being inspected in 100-metre sections. After that, the width of each section will be split into 50-metre parts for closer examination. Finally, the middle area of the dam will be scanned in 10-metre slices to get sharp images of the underwater surface. Earlier studies by the Kerala government showed that the lime-surki mortar and cement mix had worn away, exposing stones at 110 feet deep. The RoV inspection is happening as directed by the Supreme Court. Experts from the Central Soil and Materials Research Station in Delhi are leading the work, using a French-made RoV to carry out the study.
