Brazil’s far-right supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro have launched a boycott against the famous flip-flop brand Havaianas. The controversy started after actress Fernanda Torres appeared in a TV ad saying she hopes people will not start 2026 “on the right foot”, but “with both feet.” Bolsonaro’s supporters saw this as a jab at the right and called for a boycott. Eduardo Bolsonaro, son of the former president, posted a video throwing Havaianas sandals into a bin. He said, “I thought this here was a national symbol. But I was mistaken. They chose as the spokesperson for the sandal someone who is openly leftwing.” Neither Torres nor Havaianas have commented on the issue. Eduardo also told the brand to learn from Bud Light's marketing failure in the US, where an ad caused a loss before getting “forgiven” by Trump. Reports say the boycott cost Havaianas about £20 million in market value on the first day. On the left, some urged Bolsonaro supporters to donate their sandals, while others joked about swapping them for electronic ankle tags in Brazil’s national colors. This joke relates to Bolsonaro’s recent arrest and his attempt to destroy his ankle tag, leading to tougher prison conditions.
