The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI) sharply condemned the rising attacks on Christians across India during the Christmas season. In a statement on December 23, 2025, the CBCI called the situation "alarming" and said it threatens India’s constitutional rights to freedom of religion. The CBCI expressed shock over a video from Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, showing a visually impaired woman being physically harassed by BJP City Vice President Anju Bhargava during a Christmas event. The video, shared widely on social media, shows the BJP leader in a physical dispute with the woman inside church grounds. "The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI) expresses deep anguish and unequivocally condemns the alarming rise in attacks on Christians," the statement said. It added these attacks particularly target peaceful carol singers and church congregations. The CBCI demanded that Anju Bhargava be immediately removed from the BJP due to her "egregious and dehumanising conduct." The body also raised concerns about hate-filled digital posters circulating in Chhattisgarh. The posters call for a bandh on December 24, 2025, against Christians, a move that could increase tensions. "CBCI condemns these hateful acts in the strongest possible terms and urges state and Union governments to act swiftly," the statement said. The Catholic Bishops urged Home Minister Amit Shah to ensure the strict enforcement of laws and provide proactive protection to Christian communities. They want Christmas to be celebrated peacefully across India in safety and harmony. "CBCI earnestly requests the Hon’ble Union Home Minister, Shri Amit Shah ji, to ensure strict enforcement of law and proactive protection for Christian communities so that the joyful festival of Christmas may be celebrated peacefully," the statement concluded.
