Thiruvananthapuram Metro DPR to be Ready by Early 2026 with New Alignment
December 22, 2025
With just months left for the current government’s term, Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) and Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) are rushing to finish the detailed project report (DPR) for the Thiruvananthapuram metro. Sources told The Hindu that the DPR is being finalized with updates to the earlier report prepared by DMRC.
The new alignment includes a 31 km first phase with 27 stations, running from Pappanamcode to Eenchakkal. Key changes add the Technopark stretch and a rerouted line from Pattom to Ulloor via Medical College instead of Kesavadasapuram. Traffic projections and technical feasibility of these new stretches will be detailed in the revised DPR.
Once ready, the DPR will be reviewed by the State government, sent for Cabinet approval, and then submitted to the Union Ministry for Housing and Urban Affairs for final clearance. KMRL hopes to submit this before the current government ends.
After approval, KMRL will start tenders to appoint consultants and begin land acquisition. Meanwhile, road widening along the metro route will continue. The Pattom flyover needs redesigning to suit the new alignment, but Sreekaryam flyover work will continue with minor changes at Ulloor junction.
The project cost is estimated around ₹8,000 crore, with ₹250 crore per kilometre. Details of funding and loans will be fixed after Centre approval. The project was delayed but has now been redesigned following the Metro Rail Policy 2017 and Central Government guidelines. These insist the metro line include North Railway Station and the airport in its alignment.
