15 Killed in Bondi Hanukah Attack; Australia Mourns and Demands Action
December 20, 2025
On Friday at dawn, a tragic shooting unfolded at Bondi Beach during a Hanukah celebration, killing 15 people. Sajid Akram, the elder shooter, was killed, while his son Naveed was injured and arrested. They opened fire on a crowd gathered in solidarity, lighting candles to spread light and love amid dark times.
The attack was swift and brutal, captured on many cameras. The gunmen fired multiple rounds at innocent men, women, and children before police intervened. Naveed Akram faces terrorism and murder charges, with police revealing they had monitored him for years.
This horrific event has deeply shaken Australia, exposing tensions and rising antisemitism seen in recent attacks around the country. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu blamed the Australian government for failing to stop the spread of antisemitism.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced plans to strengthen gun laws, echoing reforms after the 1996 Port Arthur massacre. However, political divisions have surfaced, with critics blaming the government for radicalisation and lapses in security.
Amidst the horror, Ahmed al-Ahmed, a Syrian-born Muslim, emerged as a hero. Unarmed, he wrestled the rifle from Sajid Akram, saving many lives despite being shot five times. The prime minister praised him as "the best of our country".
The Bondi community remembers the victims with memorials, including a chalk menorah and drawings on the reopening footbridge where the shooting began. Rabbi Yosef Eichenblatt urged defiance, saying, "We need to be more joyful, more brave," and called for lighting candles even in the darkest times.
