Gunshots Spark Tension in Manipur’s Bishnupur Near Kuki-Zo Area
December 17, 2025
On Tuesday night, December 16, 2025, a volley of gunshots was heard in Manipur’s Bishnupur district, near the border with Churachandpur district. These areas, Torbung and Phougakchao Ikhai, saw fresh tension due to the gunfire. Bishnupur district is mainly Meitei, while Churachandpur is a Kuki-Zo majority area.
A police officer from Bishnupur said, "We are trying to find out if there is any casualty." The gunshots occurred just a day after 389 internally displaced persons returned to Bishnupur after over 31 months in relief camps.
Phougakchao Ikhai was among the first areas hit by ethnic violence that erupted on May 3, 2023. The conflict left over 260 people dead and forced about 62,000 others to flee their homes. Many displaced people from both the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities remain in relief camps across various districts.
Earlier, the Manipur government announced plans to resettle displaced persons in three phases by December 2025. This latest gunfire has raised concerns about peace and safety in the region.
