DJ Ahmet Shines at 30th IFFK with Magical Realism and Youthful Charm
December 16, 2025
DJ Ahmet is a lively new film from North Macedonia, featured in the World Cinema section of the 30th International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK). Directed by Georgi M. Unkovski, the film tells the story of 15-year-old Ahmet and his adventures on the Balkan grasslands.
Ahmet, played by Arif Jakup, is a cheerful boy who must take care of sheep after school, following his father's orders. He is always accompanied by his baby brother Naim. The film also introduces Aya, the girl next door, who is about to be married off despite her young age.
Their friendship grows unexpectedly, leading them to a magical night in the woods where they attend a secret rave. This event changes everything, strengthening their bond and courage to break free from their pre-set lives.
DJ Ahmet draws from Balkan cinema’s love for mixing reality with magical elements. A missing sheep that reappears painted pink symbolizes the courage to be different—the 'pink sheep' in a family.
The film won the Special Jury Award for Creative Vision and the Audience Award at Sundance Film Festival. It received a warm welcome at IFFK’s first screening on December 15 and will be shown again on December 17 at Nishagandhi. Its mix of joy, magic, and deep emotions promises to make it a crowd favorite.
