A small painting hanging above a grandmother’s bed for decades stunned its owner on the US Antiques Roadshow. The artwork, inherited from her great-grandfather, was found to be an original by Henry Farny, a famed 19th-century painter. The guest, who had once nearly taken it to college, was moved to tears upon hearing its value. Appraiser Meredith Hilferty confirmed the piece showed Native Americans on horseback and was from Farny’s best period around 1890. Farny was known for his detailed paintings of Indigenous communities. The painting once carried a mosquito under the glass, which the owner removed before college. Hilferty explained that the insect could have damaged the work. Earlier appraisals valued it at just $200-250. Antiques Roadshow estimated it at $200,000 to $300,000. The owner said, “Oh, my God. That’s so much! I don’t even know what to say. Should I have left the mosquito in the back?” The appraisal became popular online for the owner’s tearful response. Viewers said her shock reflected deep family love, not just money. Henry Farny’s art captures Native American life during western expansion. Theodore Roosevelt praised Farny for preserving American history. Farny died in 1916, but his art, like this rediscovered painting, continues to tell stories a century later.
