UDF Challenges LDF's Long Rule in Kozhikode; NDA Gains Ground in Local Body Polls
December 13, 2025
The United Democratic Front (UDF) is giving a tough fight to the Left Democratic Front’s (LDF) long rule in Kozhikode. The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has also made impressive gains, according to the local body election results by Saturday afternoon, December 13, 2025.
The Kozhikode Corporation, ruled by the LDF for nearly 50 years, shows a tight race. By 1.30 p.m., LDF led or won 31 wards, closely followed by UDF with 27 wards. NDA improved to 13 seats, up from 7 last time.
A major blow for LDF was the defeat of CP Musafar Ahmed, the Deputy Mayor and Mayoral candidate, who lost in the Meenchanda ward to UDF’s SK Aboobacker. Other LDF leaders like T. Sujan, MC Anil Kumar, and C. Rekha also faced defeat.
UDF had its setback when its Mayoral candidate PM Niyas lost to NDA’s Harish Pottangadi in Paroppadi ward. However, UDF leader KC Shobhitha won from Malaparamba ward.
In the 28-member district panchayat, UDF leads or has won 16 divisions while LDF has 12. In the 12-member block panchayat, LDF leads or has won 7 divisions, UDF 4, and there is 1 tie.
UDF kept its lead in four out of seven municipalities: Feroke, Koduvally, Payyoli, and Ramanattukara. LDF is heading to win in Koyilandy, Vadakara, and Mukkom.
Among 70 grama panchayats, UDF leads or has won 39, while LDF leads in 25.
These results show a major shake-up in Kozhikode’s political landscape as UDF challenges decades of LDF dominance and NDA grows stronger.
