West Bengal Governor demands report on expensive Messi tickets in Kolkata
December 13, 2025
West Bengal Governor C.V. Ananda Bose has written to the state government seeking a detailed report on the arrangements for Lionel Messi’s upcoming event in Kolkata on December 13, 2025. The Governor acted after many football fans complained that ticket prices for the programme were too high, preventing them from seeing their football hero. According to a Lok Bhavan official, Mr. Bose questioned why private persons were allowed to earn from Messi’s visit "at the expense of the common people’s emotions." Fans contacted Lok Bhavan saying the ticket costs were beyond their reach. The event includes a tribute programme at Salt Lake Stadium with music, dance, and an exhibition match between Mohun Bagan 'Messi' All Stars and Diamond Harbour 'Messi' All Stars. The Governor said he was "shocked to learn that only a few people who have paid a hefty price for the tickets would be able to see the star Argentine footballer." He demanded a report on the private organizer who profits from the tickets, asking, "Why are the common people barred from seeing Messi?" Messi arrived in Kolkata early on December 13, 2025, kicking off his GOAT India Tour with a meet-and-greet, interactions with football teams, and a "Master Class with Messi" for kids. Thousands braved the cold and waited overnight to welcome him. Messi is accompanied by teammates Luis Suárez and Rodrigo De Paul. Luis Suárez, Rodrigo De Paul, and Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan will join the Kolkata programmes, which also have the presence of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and other dignitaries.
