December 11, 2025
A special literary fest called “Theyila” will take place in Munnar on Sunday, December 14, 2025. Around 50 writers from the high ranges and those who have written about the area will gather for this event. The festival will start at 10.15 a.m. at the forest dormitory near the Munnar panchayat office in Idukki. Devikulam MLA A. Raja will officially open the fest.
Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award winner and Kerala Police Academy Director K. Sethuraman will give the main speech. This event is part of the golden jubilee celebration of the Eravikulam National Park and the 100th anniversary of the Munnar Government Vocational Higher Secondary School.
Writer and journalist M.J. Babu explained why the festival is special. He said, “The high ranges has a confluence of Tamil, Malayalam, and English cultures. Initially, literature was mainly in English here, by J.D. Munro, A.F.F. Martin, Violet Martin, W.S.S. Mackey, and others. Now there are many writers in Malayalam and Tamil from the high ranges. The name of the festival was kept 'Theyila' because tea is an essential part of the culture here.”
Writer Ashokan Marayur is in charge of the festival. The literary festival promises to be a colorful event celebrating the diverse cultures and history of Munnar’s high ranges.
