Telangana HC Fines Govt ₹5,000 Over Illegal Convention Centres Near Lakes
December 11, 2025
The Telangana High Court fined the State government ₹5,000 for not filing a counter affidavit in a public interest litigation (PIL) despite clear orders on November 6. A bench led by Chief Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh and Justice G.M. Mohiuddin ordered Special Government Pleader Rahul Reddy to pay the amount to the Telangana State Legal Services Authority. The PIL requests a stop on building five convention centres downstream of Osmansagar and Himayatsagar lakes. Authorities asked for two more weeks to respond, citing the Telangana Rising summit. The court refused the extension. The petitioner, farmer M. Madhava Reddy from Moinabad, said the constructions violate Government Order 111 of 1986 as they lie within a 10 km radius of the lakes' catchment area. He called the continuing illegal building in this bio-conservation zone a breach of environmental laws. The unlawful centres include Ananda convention-Kothwalguda, Neo convention-Janwada, KLN Utsav-Shankarpally, Aarya-Shankarpally, and K convention-Jubilee Hills. The court earlier told the government to file answers by December 11 and ordered action to stop the illegal works.
