Psychiatrist Urges More Awareness to Combat Rising Suicides in India
December 10, 2025
Psychiatrist Dr. S.T. Aravind has raised alarm over increasing suicide cases. He stressed the need for spreading awareness on depression and how to handle suicidal thoughts. Speaking to media on December 10, he revealed that every year, about eight lakh people die by suicide worldwide. Out of these, 1.71 lakh are from India. "One person ends their life every 40 seconds globally, and in India, a student dies by suicide every 40 minutes," he said. Dr. Aravind added, "As many as 70% of them suffer from depression. There is a lack of awareness among people. They do not know that depression needs treatment." He shared that in England, schools have psychologists and offer regular counselling. This helps lower suicide rates. He recommended a positive approach to life’s challenges and urged people to talk with family or friends when facing problems. He also suggested using helplines for counseling. Dr. Aravind emphasized the media’s role in suicide prevention. He said, "While reporting an incident of suicide, the media should not glorify it and also must avoid publicising minute details of the case." Counsellor Dr. Aishwarya V.H. also advised children to avoid social media platforms to reduce stress and trauma. She called for spreading awareness about coping methods. Those in distress can call the State’s helpline 104 or the toll-free number 14416 for help.
