Burkina Faso Frees 11 Nigerian Soldiers After Emergency Cargo Plane Landing
December 10, 2025
Authorities in Burkina Faso released 11 Nigerian military personnel after a Nigerian cargo plane made an unplanned emergency landing in Bobo-Dioulasso, the country's second largest city. The plane, a C-130 aircraft flying from Lagos, entered Burkina Faso airspace without clearance. The breakaway group AES called this an “unfriendly act.”
Burkina Faso allowed the two crew members and nine passengers to return to Nigeria. It is unclear if the aircraft was also released.
Nigeria said the plane stopped at Bobo-Dioulasso due to a technical issue during a ferry mission to Portugal. Nigerian Air Force spokesperson Ehimen Ejodame said an investigation is ongoing. He added that the Nigerian personnel were treated well and the mission will continue.
The emergency landing came just a day after Nigerian airstrikes in Benin targeted a camp linked to a foiled coup. The Nigerian government said it acted with Ecowas protocols following Benin’s request after a brief soldier rebellion.
Omar Touray, president of the Ecowas Commission, said the region is in a state of emergency due to political and security challenges. “Events of the last few weeks have shown the imperative of serious introspection on the future of our democracy and the urgent need to invest in the security of our community,” he said.
The AES group, which split from Ecowas in January, accused Ecowas of heavy intervention after coups in Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger. AES aligned more with Russia, moving away from western allies.
