Goa Nightclub Owners Flee to Thailand After Deadly Fire Kills 25
December 9, 2025
The owners of a Goa nightclub fled to Thailand hours after a deadly fire killed 25 people on Sunday. Police said the two brothers, Saurabh and Gaurav Luthra, boarded a flight to Phuket shortly after the incident. The blaze broke out at Birch By Romeo Lane, a popular club in Goa's busy nightlife area. Investigators believe fireworks inside the venue caused the fire. Most victims were staff members; four were tourists from Delhi. Five people remain in hospital. Police have asked Interpol for help to find and arrest the brothers. A police raid on their Delhi home found they had already left the country. Goa police said, "It shows their intent to avoid police investigation." Saurabh Luthra posted on social media expressing "profound grief" without mentioning his location. He said, "In this hour the irreparable sorrow and overwhelming distress, the management stands in unwavering solidarity with the families of the deceased as well as those injured, and conveys its heartfelt condolences with utmost sincerity." Four people were arrested immediately after the fire, including the club manager. The fire started early morning when the club was packed for a Bollywood DJ show. The venue’s main section stood on an island accessed by narrow walkways, making it hard for firefighters. Police now believe pyrotechnics ignited wooden beams, causing the blaze, not a gas canister as first thought. Among the victims were migrant workers, including four from Nepal. Two brothers engaged to be married next year and four members of one Delhi family also died. All victims’ bodies have been returned to their families.
