Chinese National Held in Srinagar, FIRs Filed Against Hotels for Immigration Violations
December 9, 2025
A 29-year-old Chinese tourist, Hu Congtai, was detained in Srinagar and is being questioned by J&K Police after security agencies tracked his suspicious digital footprint. Hu, a Physics graduate from Boston University, was picked up from a budget homestay near Srinagar airport. Authorities found he violated his visa by visiting restricted areas like Zanskar valley in Ladakh on November 25. Hu arrived in India on November 19 on a tourist visa valid until December 30.
The police noted he showed interest in Buddhist sites and had read books and watched movies about Kashmir, including ‘Article 370’ and ‘Curfewed Night’. His phone is undergoing forensic tests, and investigations include how he acquired a SIM card.
Following this, J&K Police have cracked down on hotels, homestays, and houseboats hosting foreign nationals without proper documentation. At least five FIRs were filed under the Immigration & Foreigners Act against owners who failed to submit mandatory Form-C to the Foreigners Registration Office. Police warned, “Non-compliance of the same is a serious offence and will invite strict legal action.”
Police continue to investigate links related to Hu’s stay and digital activities, urging accommodation owners to follow rules strictly.
