Satwinder Singh, an Indian-origin Uber driver in New Zealand, has been sentenced to seven years and two months in prison. The sentence follows his 2023 attack on a teenage passenger. The victim had booked a short ride from Speight’s Ale House to Hamilton East late at night. During the ride, Singh asked the girl if she was wearing underwear when her dress shifted. The teen said, “no, can you not?” and later, “get off me,” but Singh ignored her. He disconnected the GPS, pretending the ride was over, but cameras tracked his car. Singh locked the doors, reclined the seat, kissed, and touched the girl's breasts. He then climbed on top of her and raped her. The victim described the assault as “very rough and very hurtful.” The girl was dropped at a friend's home, distressed. Singh told police the attack was made up and the encounter was consensual. He also called New Zealand women "forward and promiscuous." The judge said the crime deeply affected the victim’s life, making her scared outside home and filled with “overwhelming rage.” Singh’s lawyer asked for a lighter sentence, citing hardship in prison due to Singh being a Sikh who lived 11 years in New Zealand. The judge refused, noting Singh worked as an Uber driver and interacted widely with locals, so no special jail treatment was due. The counsel also sought to suppress Singh’s photo, citing a relative’s mental health issues. The court did not comment further.
