Indian H-1B visa holders can now renew their visas from third countries such as the United Arab Emirates if they have valid residency permits. A Reddit user with a Dubai residency recently applied for an H-1B renewal at the US Consulate in Dubai after their India appointment was postponed from December 15 to March 9. US visa rules allow applicants to apply outside their home country if they hold a valid residency. In Dubai, officials checked residency using the Emirates ID. While home-country appointments remain preferred, third-country applications are becoming popular due to long delays in India. The user described the Dubai process as "simple and straightforward." It involved three counters for document verification, biometrics, and the visa interview with minimal wait times. Officials checked the passport, I-797 approval notice, Emirates ID, and photo. As the photo was outdated, the applicant retook it at the consulate for 80 dirhams. The applicant shared a moment of kindness when a fellow candidate offered financial help after they forgot cash and card. The visa interview was friendly and focused on employment history, salary, education, US stay, and family ties in Dubai. The officer also asked about a "Know Your Rights" brochure given during biometrics but did not ask about social media despite prior disclosure. At the end, the consular officer approved the visa and said the passport would be ready within five to seven business days. This shows third-country processing, especially at places like Dubai, is a good option for Indians facing long wait times in India.
