Mandya to Convert 4,250 Acres to Organic Farming, Boost Millet Awareness and Farmer Income
December 31, 2025
Mandya Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer K.R. Nandini announced plans to bring 4,250 acres of agricultural land under organic and natural farming. The initiative is small now but expected to grow fast for sustainable development. She spoke after launching the ‘Siridhanya Road Show’ on December 31 in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office. The event, under the Nutri-Millets scheme, aims to educate young people about millets. Ms. Nandini said, "Educating the next generation about millets (siridhanya) is a collective responsibility of society." The effort also encourages women to make tasty, healthy dishes from millets. In tune with New Year traditions, the Mandya Zilla Panchayat, NRLM, and Agriculture Department introduced millet-based foods grown organically. These are sold at under ₹100, and around 450 orders came in. Government departments spread awareness about millets while supporting women's livelihoods through self-help groups. Ms. Nandini emphasized the importance of farmers sharing their natural farming experiences. She stated natural farmers were honoured at the Atmashreshta Krushi awards, and Krushi Sakhis train others with their knowledge. She called the district’s soil and water "divine gifts" that need protection for future generations. Ashok, Joint Director of Agriculture, said Mandya leads the state by forming Farmer Producer Companies (FPCs). These groups have procured 500–600 tonnes of paddy, promoting the idea of farmers handling marketing too. He pointed out, "While the country has achieved food security, farmers are yet to attain income security." He urged farmers to see agriculture as an enterprise, not just production.
