Indian Army's Animal Contingent to March at Republic Day 2026
December 31, 2025
This Republic Day, Kartavya Path will display a unique spectacle. The Indian Army’s Remount & Veterinary Corps (RVC) will present an animal contingent for the first time ever. It will include two Bactrian camels, four Zanskar ponies, four raptors, 10 Indian-breed Army dogs, and six military dogs. These animals show the Army’s strength and self-reliance in tough terrains.
Leading the group are the Bactrian camels. They are new to the Army and trained for cold deserts like Ladakh. Adapted to extreme cold and thin air above 15,000 feet, these camels carry up to 250 kg. They help carry loads and patrol steep, sandy areas along the Line of Actual Control.
Marching with them are Zanskar ponies, small but tough mountain ponies from Ladakh. They can carry 40 to 60 kg at altitudes over 15,000 feet and endure temperatures as low as minus 40 degrees Celsius. Since 2020, these ponies have helped patrol tough terrains like the Siachen Glacier, covering up to 70 km a day.
Four raptors will fly overhead, used for bird-strike control and surveillance. This shows the Army’s creative use of animals to improve safety.
The animal march will also highlight Army dogs, called the “Silent Warriors.” Trained in Meerut by the RVC Centre and College, these dogs work in counter-terrorism, explosive detection, tracking, guarding, and rescue missions. Many dogs and their handlers have won gallantry awards for courage.
The Army has added native dog breeds such as Mudhol Hound, Rampur Hound, Chippiparai, Kombai, and Rajapalayam. This move supports Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India efforts.
On Republic Day 2026, these animals will march not just as helpers but as soldiers on four legs. They represent endurance, loyalty, and the Army’s strong spirit to protect India everywhere, from high mountains to disaster zones.
