Dehradun Police Form SIT to Probe Anjel Chakma Killing; No Evidence of Racial Abuse Found
December 31, 2025
Dehradun Police have formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the killing of Tripura student Anjel Chakma. They said so far, there is no proof of racial abuse. According to police, the attack happened after a group at a liquor shop engaged in banter, which Anjel objected to. This heated argument led to a fight. Dehradun SSP Ajay Singh said police are close to arresting the main accused, Yagyraj Awasthi, who stabbed Anjel and is now in Nepal. "The complete truth behind the incident will only be known after the arrest of the main accused (Yagyraj) Awasthi," he said. Anjel and his brother Michael were injured in the fight on December 9. Anjel later died on December 26 in hospital due to fatal spinal and neck injuries. Police noted no complaints of racial abuse were made between December 9 and 26. The FIR does not mention racial bias either. While casteist slurs were reported, two accused belong to Scheduled Tribe communities. The incident occurred at Selaqui when a birthday party led to conflict between two groups. The accused had no criminal records. Yagyraj is absconding; police have increased the reward from ₹25,000 to ₹1 lakh and issued a non-bailable warrant. Five accused are in custody; two juveniles sent to correction homes. SSP Singh assured students' safety in Dehradun. He noted more than 2,000 students from the northeast study here, including 250 from Tripura. Anjel’s father had alleged his son was attacked after defending his brother from racial slurs, including being called "Chinese momo." Police collected CCTV footage and statements to ensure a fair and transparent investigation.
