Gig Workers to Strike Nationwide on Dec 31 Over Pay, Safety Concerns
December 31, 2025
Delivery partners and workers from major quick commerce platforms such as Swiggy, Zepto, Blinkit, Zomato, Amazon, and Flipkart will strike across India on December 31. This action comes just days after similar strikes held on Christmas Day. The Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union (TGPWU) highlighted key issues including unsafe working conditions, low pay, forced 10-minute deliveries, and the blocking of worker IDs. They also demand social security and dignity at work.
The Indian Federation Of App Based Transport Workers supports the strike. With huge demand for quick deliveries on New Year’s Eve, this strike could disrupt services widely. The strike takes place amid severe air pollution in North Indian cities, where residents have been advised to stay indoors.
On December 28, TGPWU posted on X, saying, “We urge the Hon’ble Centre and State Labour Ministers to urgently act on gig workers’ issues—unfair payouts, unsafe 10-minute delivery models and arbitrary ID blocking. Ahead of the 31 Dec National Strike, convene an immediate meeting with unions and platforms.” They warned of possible delivery disruptions on December 31.
Meanwhile, The Gig & Platform Service Workers Union (GIPSWU) released a letter from President Seema Singh calling all gig workers, platform workers, and freelancers to join the strike. The letter states, “All gig workers, platform workers, digital platform workers, app-based workers, and online freelancers are earnestly requested to participate in the national strike by shutting down all work-related applications and abstaining from providing services on 31 December 2025, thereby making the strike united and effective.”
