Schools in Kamrup Metropolitan district of Assam will stay shut for one week from December 31, 2025, to January 6, 2026, due to a harsh winter. The district administration ordered this to protect students amid an extreme cold wave. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that the state capital recorded 18.1 degrees Celsius—6.4 degrees below normal on December 30. The minimum temperature was 15.1 degrees Celsius, 4.3 degrees higher than usual. IMD also predicted light rain or drizzle and shallow to moderate fog in Assam until the morning of January 1, 2026. The Chief Minister's Office said, "In view of the ongoing extreme cold wave, the Kamrup (Metropolitan) district administration has directed all government & provincialised schools to remain closed from December 31, 2025 to January 6, 2026." Provincialised schools are private schools now managed by the government. The Inspector of Schools advised no academic or extracurricular activities during the closure and asked private schools to decide based on students’ interests. In recent days, many parts of Assam, including Guwahati, saw cloudy skies and daytime drizzles. Residents warmed themselves by wood fires, and sales of heavy woolens increased. While the cold has made life tough, especially for the poor, many welcomed it as a perfect start for new year celebrations. Normal classes are set to resume from January 7, prioritising student safety and well-being.
